I thought I'd share some self-portraits I've done. They may not be the best but, every piece of work I complete is another step towards becoming a better artist. Or at least I hope!
mixed media-27”x26"-Winter 2006I completed this my Senior year of high school. In this piece, I'm wrapped up and trapped. Shortly after this I cut my hair really short, fell in love with an art college and decided never to look back. Freedom.
gouache on cold press illustration board-Fall 2007This is one of the first projects I completed for my color concepts class my freshman year at CCAD. There are two other pieces to this series. One ink line drawing, and a complimentary color acrylic painting. Gouache was perfect for this stylized piece because it allows for crisp lines and flat, solid blocks of color. This piece is very different from previous one. My pose, dress and action really show that my main focus at the time was my school work.

Yet another color concept assignment. There is no story to this other than the objective was to emulate an artist of choice. My freshman year of high school I painted a tempera forgery of Giorgio de Chirico's "Hector and Andromache," and had been in love with his style ever since. This self portrait also has two other parts, a realistic charcoal drawing and acrylic painting. It was chosen by my instructor to be part of CCAD's student exhibit. I'm not sure if it made the final cut however.

close up-handThis was one of my final drawing assignments for freshman year. I used a technique where I first smeared graphite powder over my entire paper, drew the figure and used an kneaded eraser to remove graphite to show the light areas. I was averaging three hours of sleep a night, and too stubborn to see a doctor for the ongoing chest cold I'd been suffering from. Needless to say I was drained physically and mentally. I could come up with no other ideas for this piece other than to give a look as if to say "What else do you want from me!?" It was tough, and with out a doubt the best times of my life.

Thanks for your comment on my blog! I'm really impressed with your self portraits--don't let Frida mislead you, self portraits are probably the hardest subject matter. The individual always sees more flaws that the outsider. Great hand on that last one! I love drawing hands for no other reason except that they are a subject matter that other artists think are so hard.
You should try the pastel and charcoal trick some time, it adds a fun bit of color, while at the same time being monochromatic.

this is sooo true! I used to get really hung up on trying to make every piece o art perfect, and if it wasn't I would abandon it, but I am trying to get past that and focus more on just doing it! art is never perfect!
